ITMO University in cooperation with Bioinformatics Institute starts Master's program "Bioinformatics and Systems Biology". The program is intended for training specialists able to apply bioinformatics methods for solving problems in the fields of biology and medicine. The program is conducted in English.
At the present moment, biology is at the postgenomic stage of its development. Almost any research is accompanied by the generation of huge amounts of experimental data: genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic and other types of omics data. In this regard, the issue of their correct analysis, integration and interpretation is extremely acute, which is what Bioinformatics and Systems biology are dealing with.
Methods of Bioinformatics and Systems biology are used to solve a wide range of problems - from ones in fundamental science to ones in clinical practice and industry:
- studying of evolutionary processes: the origin of species, the mechanisms of antibiotic resistance genesis, etc.;
- studying of genetic diseases molecular mechanisms and diagnosis of such disorders;
- structural modeling for the tasks of pharmacological industry;
- determination of patient-specific therapy for cancer patients and patients suffering from other diseases;
- and many others.
