Master's program
«Bioinformatics and Systems Biology»

ITMO University in cooperation with Bioinformatics Institute starts Master's program "Bioinformatics and Systems Biology". The program is intended for training specialists able to apply bioinformatics methods for solving problems in the fields of biology and medicine. The program is conducted in English.

At the present moment, biology is at the postgenomic stage of its development. Almost any research is accompanied by the generation of huge amounts of experimental data: genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic and other types of omics data. In this regard, the issue of their correct analysis, integration and interpretation is extremely acute, which is what Bioinformatics and Systems biology are dealing with.

Methods of Bioinformatics and Systems biology are used to solve a wide range of problems - from ones in fundamental science to ones in clinical practice and industry:

  • studying of evolutionary processes: the origin of species, the mechanisms of antibiotic resistance genesis, etc.;
  • studying of genetic diseases molecular mechanisms and diagnosis of such disorders;
  • structural modeling for the tasks of pharmacological industry;
  • determination of patient-specific therapy for cancer patients and patients suffering from other diseases;
  • and many others.
The program includes courses on:
  • the basics of Advanced Mathematics, Discrete Mathematics and Algorithms, Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics;
  • Programming in Python and R, Machine Learning;
  • Population and Medical Genetics;
  • Comparative Genomics and Metagenomics;
  • Analysis of Transcriptomic and Proteomic Data, Metabolomics, Analysis of Epigenetic Regulation;
  • Structural Bioinformatics.
The program is full-time. Duration: 2 years, 120 credits. The program is conducted in English.

Students will be given the opportunity to take internships in leading Russian and foreign scientific centers, such as Almazov National Medical Research Centre in St. Petersburg, Washington University in St. Louis and several others.
The program is intended for students with basic biological education. You can enter the Master's course by passing entrance exam (either in face-to-face or online form) or by winning ITMO University "Portfolio" competition. Exam includes questions on Biology, basic Mathematics and Programming.

Documents submission is carried out through the ITMO University web-site:

There are 8 state-funded places provided. The tuition fee will be approved later. The first admission is appointed for 2018-2019 academic year.
